Do Age Gaps Really Matter When Dating Filipinas?
Surprisingly, the opinion regarding age gaps is divided among Filipinos.
This is a poll and a study that explains the divide in opinion. But what it basically boils down to is the fact that around 50% of adult Filipinos agree that age matters while 41% collectively disagree. The remaining 9% couldn’t decide.
In practice, it really doesn’t matter. When someone falls in love — something that person has no real control over — age and all other complicated factors stop being important.
In my opinion, if you or your partner are neither under the age of 18 and can consent, then it’s all good.
Interracial marriage is becoming more mainstream, so seeing a Filipina walking hand in hand with an older Westerner is no longer odd. It’s not something people give a second thought about anymore — especially when you see them on the street every day.
Granted, not all mixed couples have an apparent age gap. But in the Philippines, it’s more common to see an age gap between couples rather than a mixed couple who are the same age.
So why do Filipinas want to date older men? Especially those from the West?
1. They fall in love.
There doesn’t have to be any other reason than love itself.
Sometimes folks simply fall in love and that’s all there is to it. We, humans, have a tendency to do whatever our hearts desire, and as a result, we wind up with people we never expected to enjoy life with in the first place.
2. Financial problems
People sometimes marry to improve their financial situation at times.
This thing has been done in the past, but it was much more difficult back then due to the restricted contact between Filipinas and older foreign males. They could only communicate with each other through pen pals or pricey phone calls. As a result, weddings between foreigners and Filipinas were uncommon at the time.
They also believe that this is the quickest way for them to escape poverty. Filipinos are generally committed to their families, and the majority of them will go to any length to improve their parents’ and siblings’ circumstances, including marrying for financial advantage.
Any Filipina who is asked why she chose to marry an older foreigner would most likely answer that she needs the money. It’s a long-standing practice for Filipinas to marry into wealthy families, and Filipinas are no different from those who see marriage as a business transaction.
3. The White Knight impression
Many women, especially those with limited educational opportunities, believe they are obligated to marry foreigners since they are wealthier than Filipinos.
Because people abroad make more money than in the Philippines, they believe that Americans are just naturally richer than they are. This stems from all the Hollywood movies that portray the handsome white man that has his own house, car, and other luxurious things on hand.
It makes them think that you have to go live and work in America in order to get to that level of financial stability.
This is why many Filipinas assume that all foreigners are wealthy and that by marrying one, they will be able to improve their situation and eventually buy all the things they were never able to.
There is also this belief of a rich American man being able to save a poor Filipina from her unfortunate life. Like something out of a fairytale. Women of the older age range and those that live in the province believe that a white man is able to become their Prince Charming simply because he’s foreign, looks fairer than the usual Filipino, and has money.
4. Emotional Maturity
A woman’s physiological and psychological development is faster than that of a man’s. Once a woman reaches adulthood, she is ready to be in a committed relationship. Men in their youth, however, have more hedonistic views of life, with commitments being low on their list of priorities. Biology plays a big role here.
Men who have experienced several stages of life have a broader understanding of the world around them. Life has taught them much, and they have had their fun. Now that they have grown out of their youthful curiosities, they seek stability.
Compared to their younger counterparts, older men are less likely to be swayed by their emotions. It is evident that they tend to be more decisive and more appreciative of the more important things in life. These qualities make older men attractive partners.
